The Tournaments Beta may have ended, but the hype is still alive. What the players experienced during the beta is just the tip of the iceberg. After all, the purpose of the beta is to fix any problems that may disrupt the enjoyment of the feature later.
While the beta was active, more than 125,000 tournament matches were played. That number, as well as an attempt to take advantage of the weekend, pushed the decision to extend the beta beyond its original duration. The plan was to run the beta from the 21st to the 23rd, but it was extended to the 26th. The extension should have given Psyonix additional data to help them polish the feature and iron out the kinks.
What You Can Expect with the New Tournaments Feature
You can expect to create your own tournaments, with various restrictions, boosts, or both for different modes. There’s a mode in the beta for a 128-team Drop shot-Rumble mode, which sounds really chaotic but fun. One player even said they played ‘one game with a giant basketball in low-g with hyper-fast boost’. Another player complained of a tournament titled ‘standard’ but with numerous absurd mutators. These modes and mods/mutators may not be the same upon release, though.
Time will tell if the developers will add the ability to chat while waiting for more people to join or for the tourney to start, or the option to spectate the rest of the matches if you lose earlier.
When will Tournaments be Released?
There’s no specific date mentioned yet, just that it can be expected this spring. That puts the release sometime between March and April. Other things to look forward to this spring are the new music playlists, including a brand new EP from Monstercat. As the release of those draws near, Psyonix will release free Monstercat-themed antennas, though nothing else has been revealed about them yet.
WWE fans can also look forward to having WWE-themed stuff in Rocket League in the future. No word yet what the items could be,aside from being customization items, but they promise WWE fans will be happy for the rest of the year.
While waiting for the official release, just continue enjoying the game. Whether you do it by collecting Rocket League items through trading, or figuring out a particular maneuver, there’s still much fun to be hadin the game. It’s a short wait anyway, as March is just around the corner. With how time flies by these days, April will also come sooner than you think. So don’t worry about the specifics and just take things one day at a time.
